Professional Education
Welcome to the Computer Science Department at Stevens Institute of Technology. Stevens has a long history of providing high-quality professional education to business and government in the greater New York City area. We offer several professional programs:
- M.S. in Computer Science: Traditionally a masters degree provides the student with the opportunity to "drill down" to a specific subject area in a discipline. With information technology extending its reach into more and more application domains, students are increasingly interested in the combination of concentration areas. We have designed a flexible MS/CS program that allows students to obtain an in-depth education in several aspects of IT. It is this flexibility, and this combination of specializations, that distinguishes our MS/CS program. Suggested concentrations include:
- M.S. in Service Oriented Computing: This program is an accelerated professional education program that provides domain experts with the skill sets that they need in order to use and manage the IT that is being deployed globally today. Students in this program may have little or no background in software development, but they are already or want to be a professional in a particular field with IT skills. The program will provide them with very focused training in the skill sets that are required to make them technically capable of taking existing frameworks and using them to develop new client-specific applications.
- MS in Security and Privacy: Stevens has developed a graduate program in security and privacy, that provides deep and rigorous training in cybersecurity to IT professionals who already have a background in computer science. It is intended that this become a nationally recognized credential for cybersecurity professionals. Graduates of this program will also be well-poised to pursue Ph.D. study in security and privacy, should they so choose. The program provides a rigorous education in the foundations of security and privacy, including cryptography, privacy and secure systems.
- M.S. in Multimedia Experience and Management: This program brings together two elements of user interfaces and information presentation: digital content creation and content delivery. Graduates of the program will have a firm grounding in computer graphics, human computer interaction and software engineering. Beyond this, they can choose to specialize in content creation (advanced graphics, visual analytics) or content delivery (distributed computing). Both tracks include courses in software engineering (user experience engineering and software architecture). Students can choose further specialization in either area, or greater breadth by choosing courses across the tracks or from other electives that are relevant.
- M.S. in Enterprise Computing: This program provides a broad education in both frontend and backend aspects of enterprise computing. Frontend aspects include distributed application development, Web services and service-oriented architecture. Backend aspects include systems programming, systems administration and security administration for enterprise computing. The program also provides a background in software engineering and security.
- Graduate Certificates: Each certificate program is self-contained and highly focused, comprising 12 or more credits. The courses may be used toward a masters degree in the computer science department, as well as for the certificate. The department offers certificates in topics such as cybersecurity, databases, distributed systems, software engineering and information assurance.
- weekday evenings on the Stevens Institute campus in Hoboken
- weekday evenings by request at industry and government sites
- Saturdays by request at industry and government sites. The Saturday program may be run in a lock-step manner in which all students take the same two courses during each of three twelve-week trimesters. By pursuing the program on a trimester basis, students earn the Master's degree in 18 months. Classes meet (back-to-back) each Saturday morning and afternoon. Holiday breaks include Thanksgiving, mid-winter recess, Easter and the months of July and August.
We encourage you to contact the department chair if you are interested in having our programs taught directly at your place of business
