CS 506 A - Introduction to IT Security

This course provides a basic introduction to the key concepts in security. It covers basic concepts such as authentication, confidentiality, integrity, and non-repudiation as well as important techniques and applications. Topics include access control, security economics, ethics, privacy, software/operating system security, and security policies.

Grading:

• Homeworks: 15%
• Quizzes: 25% (The 6 best ones of the 8 quizzes will count!)
• Midterm: 25%
• Final: 35%

Policies:

• Students are expected to attend all classes.
• Recording of the lectures is prohibited.
• The use of cell phones, PDAs, etc. in class is not allowed. Devices must be turned off during class.
• Laptops may be used in class only if explicitly authorized by the instructor.
• There are no make-up quizzes. The quizzes will be given at the beginning of each class.
• A make-up midterm/final will be granted only if the instructor is notified before the exam and there is serious illness or similarly important reason for missing the exam.
• For fairness to all students there will be no individual extra credit work.
• No credit will be given for assignments that are submitted late. Exceptions may be granted only if there is an important reason. Exceptions must be cleared with the instructor in advance.
• You must specify in writing any resources (web, books etc.) other than the textbook that you used for completing the assignments. Assignments may be sent through a plagiarism checker such as TurnItIn.
• It is cheating to collaboratively work out a detailed solution, to copy a solution/material from another student or some other resource without specifying it, or to give away a solution/material. Self-plagarism is also considered cheating.
• ALL parties involved in a case of cheating get an automatic grade of zero (0) in the assignment/exam. Repeated cases get an F in the course. Any case of cheating will be reported to the honor board and/or the Dean of the Graduate School.
• Any complaint regarding a grade must be presented no later than one week following the return of the respective homework, quiz, or exam.
• All class matters (submissions, emails, announcements etc.) will be handled through moodle.
